Questions

Q1: Can you describe a pivotal moment in your career that significantly influenced your approach to game design?

A: Jinesha shares that the Overwatch project was a significant turning point for her, particularly impacting her approach to game design. While working in co-development with Redhill Games and Blizzard Entertainment, she gained invaluable insights. She notes that being associated with an industry leader such as Blizzard Entertainment, was a dream come true. During her time as the art producer at Blizzard Entertainment, she learned a critical lesson: art serves design. This concept emphasizes that art isn’t just decorative but is essential in communicating gameplay dynamics and helping players understand the game’s environment and lore. This approach not only changed how she thought about art in gaming but also facilitated a closer and more effective collaboration with the art team to effectively ship extensive content for Overwatch. Working with Blizzard Entertainment was among her most enriching experiences, significantly shaping her professional path.

Q2: What does it take to land a successful career in game development?

A: Jinesha stresses that the path to a successful career in game development varies widely due to the vastness of the field and its many disciplines. Key to success is a deep passion for the industry, as the financial rewards may initially be minimal and the journey filled with learning experiences. As developers begin creating games, they often encounter setbacks, and it’s crucial to persist, try different approaches, and not give up. Continuous education and learning are essential, not just in one’s specific discipline but in understanding the holistic process of game development. For example, in production, it’s not sufficient for a project manager to merely create plans and assign tasks; understanding the nuts and bolts of these tasks, how they are performed and how different teams interact, is vital. This deep insight into the operational aspects of game development allows one to effectively communicate within the industry and work beyond superficial levels. For instance, a 3D artist isn’t just tasked with creating a room but must consider how props function within that space, how characters interact with the environment, and ensure that all elements are properly tested. She concludes by emphasizing that only those who truly love this industry will be motivated to delve into its complexities and continuously learn, which is vital for anyone looking to succeed and speak the language of video games, rather than operating at a more superficial level.

Q3: What advice do you have for women aspiring to succeed in the game design field?

A: Jinesha acknowledges that the video game industry is still predominantly male-centered, but emphasizes that it is progressively changing as more women enter the field. She points out that in video game development, there is a universal focus on passion rather than gender, race, or color. The industry consists of a community of enthusiasts who are dedicated to creating games. From her experience, there has been no bias or discrimination against women; everyone is treated equally as a video game developer contributing to the team. Jinesha advises women to not be intimidated but to find their passion, pursue what they want to do, and be themselves. She stresses that talent is what truly matters and that it will lead to success regardless of gender.
